So from now on don't wear any jewelry to practice, games, etc.. This year they are checking belly buttons too! I don't want to get disqualified for something so little!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2) This year we will be wearing entire uniforms to school on game days- J.V. on J.V. home game days &amp;amp; Varsity on all Varsity home and away games! Stunts add flair to a cheerleading routine. Stunts can be used to help lead the crowd with a cheer. They can also be used during music segments to build excitement or difficulty in a competition routine. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Basics:&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Stunting can be one of the most fun parts in all of cheerleading. What everyone must remember though, is it can be the most dangerous. If not taking the proper care while stunting, someone may get seriously hurt. Here are some rules to follow when stunting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;1) Always have SPOTTERS! It does not matter how easy the stunt may seem! Accidents can happen. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;2) Always have proper supervision. Never stunt without a coach, or adult around. Make sure THEY know what you are doing before you do it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;3) Always wear the proper clothing when stunting. This means no oversized T shirts, Huge jackets with hoods, etc. Try to wear tighter fitting clothing, so no one will get snagged by it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;4) Wear hair tied up, cut those nails, and do NOT wear any form of jewelry. All of these things can cause accidents, that do not need to happen!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;5) Make sure everyone knows what they are doing BEFORE you attempt a stunt. Nothing is worse than a girl calling in mid stunt... WHAT ARE WE DOING???&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Now that the basics of safety have been covered it is time to stunt! There are three basic positions in stunts. Flyer(top person), base (bottom person), and spotters. Each play an important role in the stunt. Not one person has the best job! Each cheerleader is usually best for one role! Yet, everyone should try each role every now and again.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Base:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The base is the bottom of the stunts. This job is extremely important. The flyer needs to trust the bases she will be flying on. Without this trust, stunts will not be up to there full capability. It is important that all bases understand the need for this trust. Here are some basic rules that bases should follow. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;1) Lift up with your legs and arms! Do not use your back. This will put a lot of strain on it. When you get older, back pain will be a chronic problem! Make sure you have a nice line...your knees slightly bent, arms tucked close to you, and back STRAIGHT! Do not lean to the flyer..this will cause you to use your back.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;2) When Double Base stunting stay close together. Although the flyers job is to suck in her legs, the bases need to help. When the flyer goes up and sucks in, the bases goal should be not to move. This means starting about shoulder width apart of the flyer. Way to many times I see bases standing too far apart, causing the whole stunt to move! VERY SLOPPY!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;3) Always be prepared to catch the flyer! Yes there are spotters who are supposed to do this also. However, three people catching is MUCH better than just one catching. Even when a stunt ALWAYS seems to hit, be prepared. It only takes ONE time for a serious accident to occur!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Flyer:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Ok so you are the flyer! You are on top of the pyramid or stunt. Sounds like a lot of fun right? yes it can be, but it can also be scary and intimidating. You need to remember a lot and have confidence within yourself. Here are some things flyers should remember.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;1) ALWAYS STAY TIGHT! This is the first rule in flying. When going up or coming down STAY TIGHT! If you are scared, instead of getting flimsy and loose think SCARED STIFF! The more scared you are the tighter you squeeze. This will make you a lot safer up there, even if you do fall. The bases have a solid body to catch, not one all over the place.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;2) USE YOUR ARMS! Many flyers tend to drop themselves into their bases arms. They expect the base to do all the work. The best flyers are able to hold all of their weight. Try doing push-ups, and lifting light weights to improve your arms strength. To test if you can hold your own weight, get a pair of bases. Have them stand shoulder width apart of you. Jump up as you are going to go up into an extension, except STOP when your feet are over their hands. If you fall right through you need arm strength. If you can hold it for 10-15 seconds you are set to go!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;3) SUCK IT UP AND IN! When you fly, you not only have to stay tight but suck your body in and up. This means when you are going up in a stunt, raise yourself up through your shoulders helping your bases. Also suck your legs together, if you do not do this you will push your bases out, making it harder for them to hold you. It will also make you less sturdy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;4) Once you are up in the stunt SHOW SPIRIT! You need to do your best to get that crowd involved. Eye contact and smiling will help lure them in. Also, remember to keep your motions sharp, as if they are being done on the ground.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Spotter:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The spotters have a huge part in the stunt. The spotters need to help brace the bases, catch the flyer if falling, and help sturdy the stunt in any way possible. The spotter needs to know how to help save things. Be aware of what EVERYONE is doing at all times. Being a spotter is a difficult position, there is no time to think, action must be done FAST! Here are some tips if you are the spotter!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;1) DO NOT BE AFRAID TO CATCH! You have to remember that the top needs to trust you. You need to catch her EVERY TIME! You can not be afraid of yourself being hurt over her. Here is a simple rule you might want to follow...if you are spotting you will always hit the ground before the flyer!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;2) Always look up, during transition stunts this becomes a little more difficult. There are times when checking a grip is important. As a basic rule though, do not take your eyes off of the flyer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;3) Catch the head and neck first! Scooping under the arms is usually a great way to do this. Remember a broken leg is better then a broken neck. Do your job to the best of your ability. If you are not spotting properly...goofing around..etc and the girl falls. The code of conduct of NHS will be in effect at all times. Team members should be leaders within the school and set a good example at all times.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;B. Team members should remember that you are a representative of NHS and your actions in and out of uniform will always reflect upon your position as a cheerleader. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;C. Each cheerleader is required to maintain emotional stability and composure while at practice, events, in uniform. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;D. There will be no public display of affection of any kind while in uniform or at events.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;E. Squad members must be courteous, friendly, and respectful to all (other team members, student body, visitors to our school, etc.)&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;F. All cheerleaders must use discression while on the internet or texting. the head coach in advance and provide the coach with the reason for the absence. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Practices/games will be excused for medical or dental appointments (with a note), illness, death in the family, and academic/religious events in which the cheerleader is a participant. Unexcused practices shall be determined at the coach’s discretion.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Failure to adhere to the team’s attendance policy will result in asking to &lt;strong&gt;sit out during the following game&lt;/strong&gt;. Three unexcused practices may result in &lt;strong&gt;asking to leave the team&lt;/strong&gt;. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have an injury, you must still attend all the scheduled practices, games, and events. This shows confidence. If the crowd can’t hear the cheerleaders, they have no reason to follow. The same goes for eye contact. Look at everyone in the crowd. Not just a small group of people such as a group of friends. Making eye contact with the fans is crucial to creating a memorable connection with them!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;P.S. Imagine hitting a brick wall that is behind you.&lt;br /&gt;2) Wrists should not be cocked, but in a straight line with your arms. Thumbs should be on the outside of your fists, with your pinky fingers in back. Show your swirlies!&lt;br /&gt;3) Your arms should not be way behind you. You should be able to just barely see them out of the corner of your eyes when looking straight ahead.&lt;br /&gt;4) Shoulders should be relaxed for every motion, not up at your ears.&lt;br /&gt;5) Shortest distance- rather than swinging your arms around, up into your High V, bring your arms straight forward in front of yourself and hit. This is true for any motion.&lt;br /&gt;6) Practice in front of a mirror. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Norton High School Cheerleading Captain’s Role&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;An &lt;strong&gt;Excellent Captain&lt;/strong&gt; works well with the squad and coaches. She always attempts to keep communications opened in both directions. She does not show any favoritism and all decisions are based on what is best for the whole team. A captain does not consider it tattling or betrayal to report something that reflects on the squad to the coach. She knows how to delegate, has great people skills, can mediate disagreements without taking sides, and is familiar with all aspects of a cheerleading squad. An excellent captain is a very valuable asset to any squad.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Skills and Traits of a Good Cheerleading Captain&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Good Communication Skills - speaks clearly and listens well.&lt;br /&gt;2. Responsible and Mature - is dependable, punctual, and emotionally mature.&lt;br /&gt;3. Positive Role Model - attempts to always set a good example in what she says and how she acts.&lt;br /&gt;4. Fair and Impartial - can separate friendships from responsibilities. Decisions should not be based on favoritism and she should always do what's best for the whole squad and not any one individual.&lt;br /&gt;5. Helpful and Friendly - should always be willing to do extra for others or to get tasks accomplished and should be kind and considerate.&lt;br /&gt;6. Be Approachable - the squad should feel like they can discuss situations and problems with the captain.&lt;br /&gt;7. Be Able to Delegate Without Being Bossy - can be tactful and respectful of others’ feelings. Remember it's not always what you say that's important but the way you say it.&lt;br /&gt;8. Respectful - must always respect peers and coaches. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Responsibility and Duties of Cheerleading Captains and CO-Captains &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Be to practices early and be one of the last ones to leave.&lt;br /&gt;2. Lead conditioning and stretching.&lt;br /&gt;3. Contact (phone calls, in school announcements) squad members when asked to do so by the coach(es).&lt;br /&gt;4. Call cheers/chants at games and/or establish how cheers will be called.&lt;br /&gt;5. Keep a list of all cheers for sidelines&lt;br /&gt;6. Participate in extra scheduled activities (pep rally decorating, poster parties, etc.)&lt;br /&gt;7. Greet and make visiting squads feel welcome before games.&lt;br /&gt;8. Keep girls on task (especially at games)… no talking, horseplay, etc.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;NOTE: If the selected captain fails to meet the expectations set forth, she may be asked to step down at any time. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;As captain, other duties may be asked of you. Different things may come up at different times during the year. Simply pay attention, do what is asked of you, and BE A LEADER. Do this, and you will be successful at your job as captain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This position can be difficult at times, so don’t be afraid to go to your coach if you are having problems and need help or even if you feel that maybe you’re not the one for the job. Cheerleaders need endurance to be able to cheer at football games, basketball games, and competitions. What better time then the summer to get in shape for next year. I have put together a workout that you should do. If you claim that you did workout this summer and really didn’t it will show to not only to the coaches but your team as well!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Cardio Exercises&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This should be done 3 times a week. It can be done on the same day as your Work Out&lt;br /&gt;Routine, but does not have to be.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Examples: &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Running&lt;br /&gt;Jogging&lt;br /&gt;Walking&lt;br /&gt;Bicycling&lt;br /&gt;Swimming&lt;br /&gt;Cleaning (mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, etc.) your parents will love this!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Anything that will get your heart rate up!! This will need to be done for 30 minutes&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Work Out Routine&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;This should be done 3 times a week, but not back to back. Take a day of rest in between&lt;br /&gt;workouts.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Warm Up&lt;/strong&gt; (2 min) - You will need to warm up before you stretch.&lt;br /&gt;Examples: Jogging, jumping jacks, walking, etc.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Stretch&lt;/strong&gt; (3 min) – Static stretching, do not bounce on the stretches&lt;br /&gt;Sitting on the floor you can cover a wide range of muscles&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;· Legs together straight out in front and lean forward and pull toes toward body:&lt;br /&gt;calves, upper back of the legs, gluts and lower back.&lt;br /&gt;· Straddle legs and lean to one side, point toes, arm overhead. Reverse. Center.&lt;br /&gt;Stretches inside thighs, lower back, and front of lower legs.&lt;br /&gt;· Lay on back, bend knees into chest. Stretches all the back muscles. Lay on back,&lt;br /&gt;bend one knee into chest them open leg out with knee bent. Reverse. (Hip Flexor)&lt;br /&gt;· Diamond stretch (soles of the feet together). Stretches inside thighs and back.&lt;br /&gt;· Beauty Queen Stretch: Bend one knee and cross over other leg that is extended&lt;br /&gt;straight out on the floor. Rotate trunk to opposite side , i.e. if right leg is crossed&lt;br /&gt;over left leg, rotate your trunk to right). Reverse. Stretches waistline (obliques)&lt;br /&gt;· Clasp hands together in front of body and pull forward. Stretches arms and&lt;br /&gt;shoulders. Repeat with arms overhead, and then lean to one side and reverse.&lt;br /&gt;Repeat with arms clasp behind back. Stretches chest.&lt;br /&gt;· One had grabs the other and pulls hand back, then push hand down. Reverse hands.&lt;br /&gt;Stretches wrists&lt;br /&gt;Standing Stretches&lt;br /&gt;· Lift leg back and grab foot. Keep knee bent beside other leg. Reverse. Stretches&lt;br /&gt;quadriceps.&lt;br /&gt;· Tilt head toward shoulder. Reverse. Stretches neck.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Abdominal Work&lt;/strong&gt; (10 min) – Used for yelling, flying, basing, spotting, tumbling, and&lt;br /&gt;jumps. VERY IMPORTANT!!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Crunches- Lay on ground on back, bring chest up, shoulder blades off of the ground&lt;br /&gt;( do not pull on neck, use your abs to do the work. 25 crunches&lt;br /&gt;2. Planks- Lay on ground on stomach, place forearms on the ground and get on your&lt;br /&gt;toes. Your back should be parallel with the ground and hold in abs. Hold for 30&lt;br /&gt;seconds. 10 planks&lt;br /&gt;3. Side Crunches- Lay on your side, put fingers at your ears and lift to the side. Use&lt;br /&gt;your chest to pull you to the side. 25 side crunches on each side &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Jump Exercises&lt;/strong&gt; (10 min) – These will help get your jumps higher and we ALL need some&lt;br /&gt;work on our jumps.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. V- Sits: These strengthen the upper and lower abdominal muscles.&lt;br /&gt;Begin on back with arms and legs extended&lt;br /&gt;Point Toes&lt;br /&gt;With quick motion, lift legs to a toe touch position and arms out in a T motion&lt;br /&gt;Should resemble a toe touch&lt;br /&gt;With quick motion bring them down&lt;br /&gt;Control the motion at all times&lt;br /&gt;10 V- Sits 3 times&lt;br /&gt;2. Practice Jumps: Perform all of the jumps that you learned from the tryouts. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Push Ups&lt;/strong&gt; – This will help your upper body strength. To hold girls up above your head you&lt;br /&gt;need to have. When doing push ups you should have your hands little more than shoulder&lt;br /&gt;width apart on the ground. You should bring your body about 3 inches from the ground&lt;br /&gt;without touching it. You may do modified push ups if you are unable to do regular.&lt;br /&gt;Modified is on your knees with your back straight. 25 push up &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Cool Down&lt;/strong&gt; This is especially important for pikes.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Toe Touch Exercise&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Try doing this exercise before you do your toe touches. Sit on the ground in a straddle position. Not too wide or else it will hurt. Also, be sure that you sit up straight, don't slouch. Place your left hand in front of you and your right behind you. Lift your right leg up off the ground and turn your leg so that your knee is pointing backward. Switch hands and do the same on your left leg. Start easy on yourself, doing 2 sets of five on each leg. Slowly work up to doing more. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Increase Your Leg Strength&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Increase the strength in your legs so that you can jump higher. One way to do this is run up and down stairs. Now that's a good work out!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Jump Higher&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Place a piece of tape as high up as you can reach on a wall in your house. Jump up 100 times and touch the place on the wall above the tape. Do this 50 times with the right hand and 50 times with the left hand.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Jump, Jump, Jump!&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Practice your jumps every day - they can only get better! Try doing three jumps in a row with no prep in between: jump, land, jump, land, jump, land. Don't always smile the same frozen smile...add some personality to it. Facial expressions worth practicing in front of a mirror until you get comfortable with them. These emotions may also be reflected by subtle motions of the mouth, eyes, neck, head position and shoulders. Learn by observing other performers on television, in musicals, at competitions and at games. Don't overperform where your expressions look rehearsed, frozen, insincere, exaggerated or fall outside a unified team image. Don't feel bad if you don't catch on the very first day. Chances are you're not the only one having difficulty.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;See if you can get a copy of the music for dances. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Practicing with just counts is good, but you need to get familiar with the beat of the music. If you have the music you can practice at home.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;PRACTICE as much as you can. If don't have time to practice physically, practice mentally. Imagine yourself doing all the moves perfectly in your head. Even though it doesn't sound like it will help, it really does because it helps you to be able to remember the moves without thinking about it when you go to tryout. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Every time you practice, even when you are learning, do all the moves full out and hit every motion really sharp. To be eligible to participate for the first quarter (fall season), students are required to have passed six courses (30 credits) from both the fourth quarter and the final grades from the previous school year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Students must also be in good standing behaviorally to participate in activities.
